Murray on Trump’s Proposed Education Cuts: This Will Come At Expense of Millions of Students

The following press release was published by the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on May 18, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

(Washington, D.C.) - Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, issued the following statement on reports that President Trump plans to propose massive cuts to education initiatives.

“President Trump and Secretary DeVos’ budget confirms their extreme ideological commitment to public school privatization will come at the expense of millions of students around the country, from preschool to college and beyond. This budget would weaken communities by eliminating funding for afterschool programs, grant aid for struggling college students and teacher and principal training programs, and so much more-even Special Olympics education programs. I sincerely hope the Trump Administration reverses course and sends us a budget request that invests in our students, teachers, and public schools."
