(Washington, D.C.) - Today, Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Ranking Member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, released the following statement in response to the Food and Drug Administration’s advanced notice of proposed rulemaking examining a product standard to reduce the amount of nicotine permitted in cigarettes and make them less addictive.
“The science has been clear for decades-we need to take action to prevent children from becoming addicted to nicotine and protect them from the serious health hazards that come with it. I’m hopeful today’s announcement will lead the Food and Drug Administration to move quickly on a strong rule that brings us in the right direction of reducing nicotine levels, making tobacco products less addictive, and protecting our children. I will continue pushing to make that happen."
