The U.S. Department of the Interior recently released its first equity action council and plan.

The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility Council will ensure the Department gives equity throughout its vast operations and removes any potential barriers to equal opportunity. It also delivers resources and benefits on an equal basis to the general public, according to an April 17 news release.

“The Interior Department has a unique responsibility to be a model for diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility," Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland said in the release. "As we celebrate the diversity of our nation, we are actively seeking ways to create opportunities for traditionally underserved communities to enjoy increased access to and benefits of our public lands and waters. By advancing equity across the Department – from our work to spur a clean energy economy and increase access to outdoor spaces to our contracting and employment efforts – we can create opportunities for the improvement of communities that have been historically underserved, which benefits all Americans.”

The news release reported the action plan is the response by the department to an executive order given by President Joe Biden, which dictates the advancement of racial equity and support for underserved communities.

The council will use data, tools and resources to access whether underserved communities face systemic barriers regarding access to the Department's services, facilities, grants, benefits, employment opportunities and more, according to the release.

The White House's April 14 statement on the release of various equity plans from departments across the government included the Department of the Interior. Its plan involves working with the Tribes, giving technical assistance through grant application processes. It also includes partnerships with with Tribal Colleges and Universities to build capacity for Tribes to apply for funding.
