WASHINGTON -- Senate Finance Committee Chairman William V. Roth, Jr. (R-DE) and Ranking Democratic Member Daniel Patrick Moynihan (D-NY) today announced their intention to hold a hearing sometime this year on the report of the Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce. Congress established the Commission in 1998 in the Internet Tax Freedom Act, to make recommendations on Internet taxation issues.
"Since its formation, the Advisory Commission on Electronic Commerce has raised a variety of important issues surrounding taxation of the Internet, such as the effect of state and local taxes, federal telecommunications taxes, and international tariffs and duties. All of these important matters will have an increasing impact on American families in the years to come," Chairman Roth and Ranking Member Moynihan stated.
"As the Senate Committee with the traditional responsibility for state and local tax issues -- as well as the Committee with jurisdiction over federal tax and trade matters -- the Senate Finance Committee is the appropriate place to consider the report of the Advisory Commission. Along with the other members of the Finance Committee, we look forward to hearing from the Commission, as well as others, after their report is issued."
