Grassley Comment on O'Neill Vote

The following press release was published by the United States Committee on Finance Ranking Member’s News on Jan. 20, 2001. It is reproduced in full below.

Today the Senate approved the nomination of Paul O'Neill to serve as Treasury Secretary under President George W. Bush. Sen. Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Committee on Finance, which held O'Neill's nomination hearing, made the following comment on the O'Neill vote.

"Paul O'Neill has my confidence for a lot of reasons. He realizes what torture the tax code imposes on the American people. He understands that our sluggish economy needs a jolt. He knows an over-active, over-taxing government is a job killer. He's run an international company through tough times, and he's comfortable at the controls of a major enterprise. President Bush has made an outstanding choice in Paul O'Neill."
