The following press release was published by the United States Senate Committee on Finance Chairman's News on Dec. 6, 2001. It is reproduced in full below.

Today the House of Representatives voted 215 to 214 to grant the President Trade Promotion Authority. Sen. Chuck Grassley, ranking member of the Committee on Finance, has pushed for months for a vote on Trade Promotion Authority in the Democratic-controlled Senate. He made the following comment on today’s House vote.

“Today’s bipartisan House vote in favor of renewing the President’s trade promotion authority is a resounding affirmation of America’s historic leadership role in world trade. Thanks to the House’s action, today the President is much closer to getting one of the most important tools he needs to strengthen the American economy, and to create new American jobs in agriculture,

manufacturing and the service industry."
