Wyden Statement on Social Security and Medicare Trustees’ Reports

The following press release was published by the United States Senate Committee on Finance Chairman's News on July 13, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today issued the following statement on the Social Security and Medicare Trustees’ Reports:

“Today’s reports reveal the claim Medicare is bankrupt as simply a political excuse to cut seniors’ benefits, and Social Security’s near term outlook is stable," Wyden said. “I’m also relieved that the process to fast track cuts to Medicare was not triggered - sparing seniors from harmful changes to Medicare at the hands of HHS Secretary Tom Price."

“There is still work to be done to update and strengthen the Medicare guarantee for America’s seniors by bringing down the high price of prescription drugs and improving the program for people with chronic illnesses. Although Social Security’s finances have improved slightly, policymakers need to work in a bipartisan way to fully secure these earned benefits for workers and their families."
