Wyden Statement on GAO Report on IRS Staffing, Enforcement Capabilities

The following press release was published by the United States Senate Committee on Finance Chairman's News on March 27, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Senate Finance Committee Ranking Member Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today released the following statement in response to GAO report on IRS staffing and enforcement capabilities:

“Republicans in 2011 launched an all-out assault on IRS enforcement and the agency is in crisis. On top of their giveaways for the wealthy and corporations, Republicans have issued an open invitation to cheat. Enforcement staff are down 27 percent and individual audits are down 40 percent. Making matters worse, staffing deficiencies are most acute in areas that require the most skill and expertise. Congress needs to do its part to strengthen the agency to ensure the well-connected are paying what they owe."
