Wyden Statement on President Biden’s Commitment to Cut U.S. Emissions in Half

The following press release was published by the United States Senate Committee on Finance Chairman's News on April 22, 2021. It is reproduced in full below.

Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden, D-Ore., today released the following statement on President Biden’s commitment to cut U.S. emissions in half by 2030:

“I commend President Biden’s commitment to cutting U.S. emissions in half by 2030. The best place to start is my Clean Energy for America Act. Moving to an emissions-based approach, rather than sticking with the same old technology-based approach, is key to achieving these ambitious climate reductions. If we don’t reward results, we won’t achieve the president’s emissions goals.

“Importantly, tax incentives tied to emissions goals is a policy that won’t hit procedural roadblocks. While no decisions have been made on process, as chairman of the Finance Committee, it’s important to plan for every contingency. Overhauling the energy tax code is an approach that could go through regular order, but would also comply with the Byrd rule."
