El Malpais National Monument is hosting a lunar eclipse party on Sunday, May 15, 2022, from 8 pm to 11 pm at the El Malpais Visitor Center. During this blood moon lunar eclipse, the earth will sit fully between the sun and the full moon. Earth’s shadow will fall on the surface of the moon, creating a red effect known as a blood moon. The full eclipse will last from 9:29 pm until 10:53 pm.
Drop by any time during the eclipse or stay for the full duration! Gates open at 8:00 pm and close at 11:00 pm. The Western National Parks Association bookstore will be open from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Bring lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy the eclipse more comfortably. Telescopes will be set up to better view the moon during the eclipse, but we also recommend bringing your own binoculars for better viewing.
This event will be hosted in the parking lot of the El Malpais Visitor Center located at 1900 E Santa Fe Ave, Grants, NM 87020.
