LEVIN: Statement on Moody's Announcement

The following press release was published by the U.S. Congress Committee on Ways and Means on July 13, 2011. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON - Ways and Means Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-MI) today made the following statement after Moody’s Investors Service put the U.S. government’s credit rating on review for possible downgrade.

"At today's hearing, we heard leading economists warn once again about the prospects of default. This additional warning from Moody's is only further evidence of what Democrats have been saying for months: failure to raise the debt ceiling is not an option. Republican ideology is threatening to push a still recovering American economy towards the edge of the cliff. And yet, today the Senate Republican leader predicted not a single Republican would support avoiding default by raising the debt ceiling. It is time for Republicans to put blind ideology aside and think about the good of our nation. They are playing with fire and the sparks are already flying."
