Rep. Ryan on GOP Tax Proposal: “I don’t know” if middle class would suffer

The following press release was published by the U.S. Congress Committee on Ways and Means on March 26, 2012. It is reproduced in full below.

Republican Budget Chairman Paul Ryan yesterday made his priorities clear when asked by Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace whether the Republican tax proposal would hurt the middle class even as it cuts taxes for millionaires by an average $150,000 a year.

Chris Wallace: Are you willing to say that it would not only be revenue neutral, but also distributionally neutral, which means that the wealthy aren't going to benefit and the middle class isn't going to suffer?

Rep. Paul Ryan: I don't know. There is no way to know the answer to that question.

Of course there is. Just as he so confidently asserted that the plan would be revenue neutral, Rep. Ryan could say that the middle class won’t suffer. But he would have to prepare a tax proposal where the priority is the middle class, not the very wealthy. And that’s clearly not his or the House Republican Conference’s goal.
