Levin Opening Statement at Committee Markup of ABLE Act

The following press release was published by the U.S. Congress Committee on Ways and Means on July 31, 2014. It is reproduced in full below.

This measure affects tens of millions of Americans living with disabilities and their families who want to provide some measure of economic security for them. Whether it is costs associated with transportation or housing or health prevention and wellness, this legislation aims to ease the financial burden by encouraging and assisting families to save money for disability-related expenses.

As the Chairman noted, important work remains to be done before this measure can become a reality.

Committee Democrats and I strongly believe that the cost of this measure must be offset. The Chairman and I have agreement that an offset for this legislation must be agreed upon by the Chairman and myself and must be added to the legislation before it comes to the House floor.
