WASHINGTON, DC - Ways and Means Committee Ranking Member Sander Levin (D-MI) today issued the following statement after House and Senate leaders reached a budget agreement:
“The Agreement before us - as its primary purpose - avoids default on the full faith and credit of the United States. It also remedies a number of problems, including protecting seniors from a significant increase in their Medicare premiums and deductibles, and safeguarding Social Security disability benefits.
“With the raising of budget caps, Republican leadership will now be tested on whether there can be adequate funding for domestic and defense programs that also avoids radical Republican cuts and riders. It is a shame that Republicans waited to the last minute to begin discussions on the critical issues in this bill with Democrats, who fought successfully to bring about responsible savings provisions."
