United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai today met with World Trade Organization (WTO) Director General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and held a productive discussion about global trade issues. Deputy United States Trade Representative and Chief of Mission, Geneva, María Pagán, and Deputy Director General Angela Ellard also attended the meeting.
Ambassador Tai and Director General Okonjo-Iweala agreed that the WTO needs to show that it can be a relevant force for good in the lives of all people. They discussed COVID-19 and the ongoing discussions among WTO Members to reach a meaningful outcome on a pandemic response. Ambassador Tai stressed her commitment to continued engagement with members of Congress and stakeholders as the WTO works to break the deadlock on this issue and get as many safe and effective vaccines to as many people as fast as possible.
Ambassador Tai and Director General Okonjo-Iweala also discussed the upcoming 12th Ministerial Conference, global food security concerns, and broad supply chain challenges in key sectors. They agreed to stay in regular communication on these and other issues in the days ahead.
