“I'd like to congratulate the Tunisian people on completing their first direct election for president. After a spirited campaign, Tunisians have much to be proud of.
“As the birthplace of democracy in the Arab world, Tunisia is showing itself to be a model for compromise, civility, inclusion and the democratic spirit.
“I look forward to working with President-elect Beji Caid Essebsi to build a more prosperous, secure and democratic Tunisia as well as a stronger US-Tunisian relationship.".
