Engel Calls on International Community to Renew Fight Against All Forms of Hatred on Holocaust Remembrance Day

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on May 5, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

WASHINGTON-Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement in remembrance of the Holocaust on this Yom HaShoah, urging the international community to fight back against all forms of hatred.

“On this Holocaust Remembrance Day, the world recalls the most tragic and solemn events of the Shoah which claimed the lives of 11 million. The genocide against Jews and others by Nazis and their collaborators remains to this day one of humanity’s darkest chapters. We remember those who have perished and those who fought back for humanity.

“Bigotry, racism and violent atrocities still cast a dark shadow on our world nearly seven decades later, whether in the form of anti-Semitic attacks in Paris and Copenhagen; hate crimes against the LGBT community in places like Bangladesh; and at the hands of ISIS terrorists and the Assad regime as they commit war crimes and crimes against humanity.

“During the Holocaust, some bystanders turned a blind eye because it did not directly affect them or their communities. But bigotry, violent intolerance, and hatred know no borders. Sixty-seven years ago, the world said ‘never again.’ On this Yom HaShoah, we must renew our commitment, back our words with action, and stand tall in the face of all forms of hatred and violence.".
