WASHINGTON-Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement.

“I commend the Government of Ethiopia for its progress toward political reform, notably the release of political prisoners and the recent decision to lift the state of emergency. I am also encouraged that in his first months as Prime Minister, Dr. Abiy has begun to address the instability that has shaken the country over the past two years. I was proud to support legislation that passed the House in April underscoring Congress’s respect for human rights and inclusive governance in Ethiopia. I look forward to supporting the Government of Ethiopia’s continued reforms.".
