Washington-Representative Eliot L. Engel, Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement.
“I’m alarmed by reports of an attempted coup in Amhara Regional State in Ethiopia, which resulted in the death of President Ambachew Mekonnen and Chief of Staff of the Ethiopian National Defense Forces Seare Mekonnen. My condolences go out to their families and to those of others who were killed or wounded in this violence. Ethiopia is a key partner for the United States, and I sincerely hope this weekend’s events do not derail the country’s momentous political transition.".
