Washington, DC - Today, House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul (R-TX) and Chairman Gregory W. Meeks (D-NY) along with the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, Civilian Security, Migration and International Economic Policy Lead Republican Mark Green (R-TN) and Chairman Albio Sires (D-NJ) and Founder and Co-Chairman of the House Haiti Caucus Andy Levin (D-MI) issued the following statement condemning threats against Haitian human rights defender Pierre Espérance and staff of the National Human Rights Defense Network (RNDDH).

“Reports of death threats against Mr. Espérance in retaliation for his work are extremely alarming, and the U.S. Congress is focused on ensuring the safety of Mr. Espérance and his colleagues. Any further attempts to silence, intimidate, harass, threaten, or cause harm to Mr. Espérance or RNDDH staff are intolerable. We call on the Haitian authorities to investigate any threats made against Mr. Espérance and take all necessary steps to ensure his safety and the safety of his colleagues.".
