COUNTY EMPLOYMENT AND WAGES – FOURTH QUARTER 2021
From December 2020 to December 2021, employment increased in 334 of the 343 largest U.S. counties, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. In December 2021, national employment increased to 148.3 million, a 5.2-percent increase over the year, as measured by the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) program. Clark, NV, had the largest over-the-year increase in employment with a gain of 13.3 percent. Employment data in this release are presented for December 2021, and average weekly wage data are presented for fourth quarter 2021.
Among the 343 largest counties, 334 had over-the-year increases in average weekly wages. In the fourth quarter of 2021, average weekly wages for the nation increased to $1,418, a 5.9-percent increase over the year. Palm Beach, FL, had the largest fourth quarter over-the-year wage gain at 15.6 percent.
Large County Employment in December 2021
Clark, NV, had the largest over-the-year percentage increase in employment (+13.3 percent). Within Clark, the largest employment increase occurred in leisure and hospitality, which gained 65,045 jobs over the year (+33.1 percent).
Hinds, MS, experienced the largest over-the-year percentage decrease in employment, with a loss of 0.9 percent. Within Hinds, combined government had the largest employment decrease with a loss of 860 jobs (-2.6 percent).
Large County Average Weekly Wage in Fourth Quarter 2021
Palm Beach, FL, had the largest over-the-year percentage increase in average weekly wages (+15.6 percent). Within Palm Beach, an average weekly wage gain of $921 (+39.0 percent) in financial activities made the largest contribution to the county’s increase in average weekly wages.
Kitsap, WA, had the largest over-the-year percentage decrease in average weekly wages, with a loss of 5.5 percent. Within Kitsap, professional and business services had the largest impact, with an average weekly wage decrease of $970 (-38.2 percent) over the year.
Ten Largest Counties
All of the 10 largest counties had over-the-year percentage increases in employment. In December 2021, San Diego, CA, had the largest over-the-year employment percentage gain (+8.1 percent). Within San Diego, leisure and hospitality had the largest employment increase, with a gain of 51,700 jobs (+40.1 percent).
All of the 10 largest counties had over-the-year percentage increases in average weekly wages. In fourth quarter 2021, Miami-Dade, FL, experienced the largest over-the-year percentage gain in average weekly wages (+11.1 percent). Within Miami-Dade, professional and business services had the largest impact, with an average weekly wage increase of $235 (+13.7 percent) over the year.
