Today, Administrator Power met with Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs for the State of Qatar. Administrator Power and Foreign Minister Al-Thani discussed collaborating to address food insecurity, climate change, and other issues of mutual interest. The Administrator provided updates on the United States’ response to the global food crisis, as well as the ongoing humanitarian crises in Afghanistan, the Horn of Africa, and Yemen.
The Administrator thanked the Government of Qatar for its leadership in addressing the crisis in Afghanistan, including their assistance with the evacuations last August and more recently in co-hosting the humanitarian donor pledging conference and making a $25 million contribution. She stressed the importance of the truce on the humanitarian situation in Yemen and the urgent need for additional resources.
Administrator Power noted that Ukraine remains a top humanitarian response priority, and that as a result of Putin’s war, 40 million people globally are at risk of being pushed into poverty and food insecurity in 2022.
