The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) announced recently it will provide $27 million to four projects that will promote independent mobility by blending creative business ties, -practices and technologies.
The awards also will drive the implementation of the second and third phases of the Complete Trip ITS4US Deployment Program, according to a news release from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
“By bringing together public-sponsored and private-sponsored research, the program will enable communities to build local partnerships that develop and deploy integrated and replicable mobility solutions to achieve complete trips for all travelers,” Deputy Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology Dr. Robert C. Hampshire, said in the USDOT news release.
According to the release, one of the goals of the USDOT is to improve access and equality in different methods of transportation, and, hopefully, the funding will lead to the development of safe, affordable and reliable transportation options for the disabled, giving them access to the same transportation opportunities as those who are not disabled.
The ITS4US program is designed to provide funding for projects that offer solutions to mobility hurdles often connected with disabled, elderly and low-income persons, according to the ITS4US website.
