U.S. Border Patrol agents from El Centro Sector rescued five undocumented individuals in the Jacumba Wilderness region Wednesday afternoon.
At approximately 12 p.m., Sector Communications notified El Centro station of a 9-1-1 call received from a local police department regarding five lost migrants in distress and in need of assistance in the mountains of El Centro’s area of responsibility. Agents were notified of the distress call and the last known GPS coordinates provided by the distress individuals.
An aircraft from Customs Border and Protection’ Air and Marine Operations branch assisted in the search and at approximately 12:20 p.m., located the individuals a mile north of the U.S./Mexico border. Agents were notified of their location and made contact with the individuals shortly after.
Agents performed a wellness check of the individuals, and it was determined no medical assistance was needed. Agents determined that the individuals did not possess the required documents to be legally present in the United States.
The individuals, which included a 26-year-old man from Honduras, a 62-year-old woman and an unaccompanied juvenile from El Salvador, and two unaccompanied juveniles from Guatemala were taken into custody and transported to the El Centro Sector Processing Center for additional medical evaluation and to be processed accordingly.
Since October, El Centro Sector Border Patrol agents have successfully rescued 199 individuals who were lost, in distress, or abandoned by smugglers.
