Administrator Samantha Power on the Afghanistan Earthquake

USAID is deeply saddened by the devastating magnitude 5.9 earthquake in eastern Afghanistan this morning, which media report has already resulted in at least 1,000 deaths and 1,500 injuries. The Afghan people, who are already in the midst of a humanitarian crisis, are showing incredible resilience in the face of this latest disaster. The United States and our humanitarian partners are already stepping up to respond, including deploying medical teams to provide immediate care to people affected in Paktika province and deploying assessment teams to rapidly determine additional needs.

We will continue to support the Afghan people and work alongside our partners to meet their urgent needs.
