Reclamation employees breathe new life into Sanford Park

A team of Reclamation employees from the Marias/Milk Rivers Division spent the last two years refurbishing the baseball field at Sanford Park, nestled along the Marias River south of Tiber Dam.

“It is great to see all the kids running everywhere and adults playing softball out at Sanford Park again,” said Toby Tabor, Supervisory Natural Resources Specialist for the Montana Area Office’s Marias/Milk Rivers Division. “The team here put in a lot of hard work to fix and promote the field to get the community involved and out here enjoying this little oasis near Tiber Dam.”

Eric Kleinsasser, Benjamin Colbry, Nicholas Ludwig, Engineer Equipment Operators, and Mary Devries, Administrative Support Assistant, spent the last two years refurbishing the old baseball field by putting in a new backstop, lining out the field, buying new bases, landscaping, and building a box full of baseballs, bats, and kickballs for visitors to borrow while using the field.

The last game of the baseball season was played at Sanford Park in late June, and Tabor received a lot of positive feedback from local residents saying Sanford Park looks better than it has in years, and they are looking forward to more games being played there in the future.

“I am very proud of the team at the Marias/Milk Rivers Division for getting involved with the local community and restoring Sanford Park,” Ryan Newman, Montana Area Office Manager said. “I can’t wait to hear more about residents enjoying the area and other activities happening the rest of the summer.”

There are 289 Reclamation project areas that have developed recreation facilities and opportunities available for public use. Over 100 are managed by a Federal recreation partner. Reclamation has approximately 6.5 million acres of land and water, most of which is available for public outdoor recreation. The 187 developed recreation areas managed by Reclamation or a non-Federal recreation partner draw over 24 million visits annually.
