Wakpala Man Sentenced For Sexually Assaulting A Minor

US Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Wakpala man, convicted of Sexual Assault of a Minor, was sentenced on Jan. 3, 2013, by US District Judge Charles B. Kornmann. Tyrel DeMarrias, a/k/a Tyrell DeMarrias, age 25, was sentenced to 12 months and 1 day in custody, 5 years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment.

DeMarrias was indicted for Sexual Assault of a Minor, Sexual Abuse, and Aggravated Sexual Assault by Force on Feb. 14, 2012. He pled guilty to Sexual Assault of a Minor on Oct. 16, 2012. The conviction arose from an incident in Wakpala, South Dakota, in September of 2011.

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Standing Rock Agency. Assistant US Attorney Mikal Hanson prosecuted the case.

DeMarrias was remanded to the custody of the United States Marshal to begin serving his sentence.
