Eagle Butte Man Pleads Guilty To Assault

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of the United States Attorneys on Jan. 10, 2013. It is reproduced in full below.

US Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that Ryan Wright, age 27, of Eagle Butte, appeared before US District Judge Roberto A. Lange on Jan. 10, 2013, and pled guilty to Count III of the Indictment that charged him with Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury. The maximum penalty upon conviction is 10 years of imprisonment, a $250,000 fine, or both.

The charge stems from a Nov. 14, 2012, incident when Wright, after an evening of drinking to celebrate a move to a new residence, argued with other people present, left the residence but came back and hit the victim with his car, running the victim over several times. The victim suffered fractures in his left ankle and pelvis which required surgery.

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Assistant US Attorney Kathryn N. Rich is prosecuting the case. Wright was remanded to the custody of the US Marshal pending sentencing. A sentencing date has been set for April 1, 2013.
