The United States Attorney for the District of Vermont announced that Craig Smith, 25, of Wells River, was sentenced today in United States District Court in Rutland to 18 months of imprisonment following his guilty plea to a charge that he unlawfully possessed a firearm as a convicted felon. U. S. District Judge Geoffrey Crawford also ordered that Smith serve a three-year term of supervised release upon completion of his prison term. Smith has been incarcerated since his arrest last December.
On Dec. 11, 2014, a federal grand jury returned a two-count indictment charging Smith with being a felon-in-possession of a firearm and being a drug user in possession of a firearm. According to court records, on Dec. 1, 2014, Smith sold a.22 caliber revolver for $150 to a confidential informant working with the Vermont State Police. Smith is prohibited from possessing any firearms because he was convicted in 2014 of accessory after the fact to assault and robbery. At the time of the gun sale, Smith was also a heroin addict. Smith pled guilty to the felon-in-possession charge in March.
