Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth R. Moellering, who handled the case, stated that the defendant made false statements on his application for a U.S. passport on Aug. 29, 2008. Abdus failed to disclose the fact that he had previously entered the U.S. in 1993 using a different name and had claimed asylum under that alias. Fingerprints confirm that it was the defendant who entered using the alias in 1993.
The sentencing is the culmination of an investigation by Special Agents of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, under the direction of James C. Spero, Special Agent in Charge, and Special Agents from the United States Department of State, Diplomatic Security Service, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge William Ferrari.
