Ashland Man Charged with Drug & Gun Crimes

MADISON, WIS. - Jeffrey M. Anderson, Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced today the unsealing of an indictment that charges Tony R. Compton, 27, Ashland, Wis., with drug and gun crimes. The indictment was returned by a federal grand jury on June 22, and was unsealed following Compton’s arrest.

The indictment alleges that Compton possessed methamphetamine with the intent to distribute on September 1 and October 6, 2016. The indictment also charges Compton with possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. It alleges that Compton possessed a.25 caliber handgun on Sept. 1, 2016.

Compton was arrested on June 29 while in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, and has made a preliminary court appearance on this indictment in U.S. District Court in Marquette, Mich.

If convicted, Compton faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison on each charge of possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, and a mandatory minimum penalty of five years on the charge of possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

The charges against him are the result of an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, Ashland Police Department, and Ashland County Sheriff’s Office. The prosecution of this case is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Corey Stephan.
