Roanoke, VIRGINIA - On Nov. 15, 2017, Chief Judge Michael F. Urbanski of the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia administered the oath of office to Rick A. Mountcastle to serve as United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia, pursuant to his appointment by United States Attorney General Jefferson B. Sessions. Mr. Mountcastle has served as the Acting United States Attorney since January 7, 2017. He has been a federal prosecutor for more than thirty years, first with the Department of Justice and, for the last twenty-two years, with the United States Attorney’s Office. During his tenure with the United States Attorney’s Office, he has served as First Assistant United States Attorney and, before that, as Civil Chief. By law, the appointment is for 120 days or until the Senate confirms a United States Attorney nominated by President Donald J. Trump.
