MADISON, WIS. -- A federal grand jury in the Western District of Wisconsin, sitting in Madison, returned the following indictments. You are advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
The maximum statutory sentence is prescribed by Congress and is provided here for informational purposes. If convicted, the sentencing of a defendant will be determined by the court based on the advisory Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
Bayfield County Man Charged with Drug Crimes
John R. Hauk, 40, Barksdale Township, Wis., is charged with conspiring to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine. The indictment alleges that this conspiracy operated from June to November 2016.
The indictment also charges Hauk with maintaining a place in Barksdale Township for the purposes of storing and distributing methamphetamine, and with two counts of distributing five grams or more of methamphetamine.
This sealed indictment was returned by the grand jury yesterday and was unsealed today. Hauk was arrested on these charges in northern Michigan yesterday. No date has been set for his initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Madison.
If convicted, Hauk faces a maximum penalty of 10 years to life in federal prison on the conspiracy charge, 20 years on the maintaining a drug dwelling charge, and a mandatory minimum of five years and a maximum of 40 years on each of the counts alleging distribution of five grams or more of methamphetamine. The charges against him are the result of an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, and Ashland Police Department. The prosecution of this case is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Corey Stephan.
Milwaukee Man Charged with Drug Crime
Casey L. Walker, 38, Milwaukee, Wis., is charged with attempting to possess five kilograms of cocaine with the intent to distribute. The indictment alleges that he attempted to possess the cocaine yesterday.
Walker was arrested last night in Verona, Wis. No date has been set for his initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Madison.
If convicted, Walker faces a mandatory minimum penalty of 10 years and a maximum of life in federal prison. The charge against him is the result of an investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration and Dane County Narcotics Task Force. The prosecution of this case is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Julie Pfluger and David Reinhard.
Madison Man Charged with Gun Crime
Keith Harris, 24, Madison, Wis., is charged with receiving ammunition while under indictment for a crime punishable by imprisonment for one year or more. The indictment alleges that on Oct. 20, 2017, he received.9mm ammunition.
If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison. The charge against him is the result of an investigation by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office, Madison Police Department, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The prosecution of this case is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Anderson.
Former Polk County Resident Charged with Mail Theft
Joanne T. Huehn, 41, formerly of Milltown, Wis., is charged with stealing from the mail while an employee of the U.S. Postal Service. The indictment alleges that in September 2016, she stole a Menards rebate check in the amount of $387.06 from an envelope intended to be conveyed by U.S. mail.
The indictment also charges Huehn with stealing more than $1,000 from the U.S. Postal Service from January 2016 through April 2017.
If convicted, Huehn faces a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison on the charge of mail theft, and 10 years on the charge of stealing government property. The charges against her are the result of an investigation by the U.S. Postal Service, Office of Inspector General. The prosecution of this case is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Chadwick Elgersma.
Mexican Citizen Charged with Illegally Reentering U.S.
Manuel Bonilla-Sanchez, also known as Alejandro Vasquez-Rodriguez, 41, a citizen of Mexico found in Eau Claire, Wis., is charged with illegally reentering the United States after previously being deported. The indictment alleges that he was found in the United States on March 6, 2017.
If convicted, Bonilla-Sanchez faces a maximum penalty of two years in federal prison. The charge against him is the result of an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The prosecution of this case is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Antonio Trillo.
