MADISON, WIS. -- Scott C. Blader, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Reginald Morris, 47, Madison, Wisconsin, was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge William M. Conley to 10 years in federal prison, followed by a three-year term of supervised release, for bank robbery. Morris pleaded guilty to this charge on Jan. 10, 2018.
On March 22, 2017, Morris entered Associated Bank, Cottage Grove Road, Madison, and handed a teller a note, demanding money. The note claimed Morris had a bomb. The teller complied with the demand and turned over cash to Morris. Morris wanted the demand note back, but the teller refused to give it to him. Morris did not disguise his face in any way, and after the Madison Police Department released photos of the robbery, several individuals called and identified Morris as the robber. Morris’ fingerprints were identified on the note, and handwriting exemplars proved he wrote the note.
At the time of the robbery, Morris was serving a term of extended supervision for two prior armed robbery convictions in Dane County Circuit Court. In January, his supervision was revoked and he was sentenced to four years in state prison. In choosing a 10-year sentence, Judge Conley stated that the public deserved to be protected. Judge Conley ordered the sentence to run concurrently to Morris’ state sentence.
The charge against Morris was the result of an investigation conducted by the Madison Police Department. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rita M. Rumbelow.
