Tampa, Florida - U.S. District Judge Elizabeth A. Kovachevich today sentenced Kevon Melendez (22, Bradenton) to five years and three months in federal prison for possessing with the intent to distribute carfentanil and cocaine. He pleaded guilty on Jan. 12, 2018.
According to court documents, on Feb. 14, 2017, law enforcement officers with the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office were searching for a fugitive when they observed the fugitive riding in the backseat of a car Melendez was driving. As the officers approached the vehicle, they smelled the odor of marijuana coming from inside the car. The officers observed Melendez with a scale between his legs. As an officer was removing Melendez from the car, he observed Melendez drop a plastic bag containing several substances. Those substances later tested positive for cocaine (27.99 grams) and carfentanil (approximately 11 grams). Melendez also had $580 on his person.
This case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Shauna S. Hale.
This case is the result of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation dubbed “Hot Batch." The principal mission of the OCDETF program is to identify, disrupt, and dismantle the most serious drug trafficking and money laundering organizations and those primarily responsible for the nation’s drug supply.
