Man Charged With Misuse of a Social Security Number

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA - GUSTAVO ADOLFO ACOSTA-ARENAS, age 28, was charged in federal court on Monday, Aug. 26, 2019 in a one-count Bill of Information for illegal use of a Social Security Number.

ACOSTA-ARENAS faces a maximum term of imprisonment of not more than five years, a fine of $250,000.00, and a mandatory special assessment of $100.00. Additionally, ACOSTA-ARENAS is subject to a period of supervised release after imprisonment of up to one year.

According to the Bill of Information, on or about Aug. 14, 2019, ACOSTA-ARENAS, for the purpose of obtaining employment and for other purposes, knowingly and with intent to deceive, did falsely represent on a United States Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Eligibility Verification Form that a Social Security Number not issued to him, was assigned to him; all in violation of Title 42, United States Code, Section 408(a)(7)(B).

U.S. Attorney Strasser praised the work of the United States Department of Homeland Security in investigating this matter. Assistant United States Attorney Irene González is in charge of the prosecution.
