The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposed interim plans for the cleanup of groundwater in private, domestic drinking water wells at residential properties at the Washington County Lead District Superfund Sites in southeastern Missouri.

According to a July 19 EPA news release, the Washington district is made up of four sites on the National Priorities List and includes Furnace Creek, Old Mines, Potosi and Richwoods. The plan calls for iterim action on point-of-use treatment systems that have institutional controls and health education. The EPA will continue to investigate and study the process to analyze possible alternatives to remediate the aquifer that is the common denominator of contaminated well water. They will also determine a last remedy.

“Protecting our communities from the devastating impacts of lead exposure is a national priority for EPA,” EPA Region 7 Administrator Meg McCollister said in the release. “Ensuring the availability of clean drinking water for Washington County homes will promote healthier lives and prevent lifelong adverse impacts to children, our most vulnerable population.”

At the WCLD Sites, lead is the main contaminant of concern, while some wells may have elevated levels of cadmium, arsenic and barium, according to the release. Lead and other heavy metals will be eliminated from drinking water at the tap using point-of-use treatment systems, sometimes referred to as drinking water filters.

The release reported a comment period will be open for the public July 19-Aug. 18.

According to the release, comments, questions or requests for information regarding the site can be directed to Commuity Involvement Coordinator at the Office of Public Affairs Elizabeth Kramer.
