Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves toured the Brooklyn Navy Yard July 21 to see the many startups and industries advancing innovation in the area, including Amogy, a pioneer in renewable energy.
Amogy wants to revolutionize the heavy-duty transportation sector by offering a high-performance, zero-emission alternative energy source that runs on ammonia as a fuel, according to a July 22 news release.
“Ensuring the U.S. remains a leader in the development of emerging technologies is vital to our competitiveness. The Brooklyn Navy Yard is a reflection of American innovation at work," Graves said in the release. “Domestic manufacturing enables us to build the industries of tomorrow and create jobs in the process.”
Amogy has successfully demonstrated several practical applications of its carbon-free fuel technology, the release said. Amogy CEO Seonghoon Woo said the company is on its way to provide viable solutions so that industries emitting the highest amount of greenhouse gases can be decarbonized.
“Decarbonizing the heavy transportation sector is necessary to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and critical to the vitality of the U.S. and global economy,” he said in the release. “Meeting this goal requires a robust portfolio of clean energy solutions to which Amogy is an essential partner.”
Amogy’s goal to accelerate the global transition to Net Zero 2050 requires reducing five billion metric tons of CO2 emissions by 2040 with its groundbreaking technological solution, the release reported. Amogy wants to cut worldwide CO2 emissions by about five gigatonnes by 2040, or 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions.
The Brooklyn Navy Yard-based startup was established in November 2020, the release said. To date, it has attracted $70 million in capital, including backing from Saudi Aramco, the largest oil company in the world, and Amazon through its Climate Pledge Fund.
