Education and Labor Committee Republican Leader Virginia Foxx (R-NC) issued the following statement after the Committee passed legislation that would mandate an overly prescriptive heat standard and add layers of burdensome regulations to our school nutrition programs:
“By advancing H.R. 2193 Democrats are putting the interests of Big Labor and radical climate activists ahead of workers and job creators. Small businesses will be especially harmed. Their concerns will be pushed aside since H.R. 2193 hijacks OSHA’s rulemaking process—their avenue for input. This law will also mandate a restrictive heat standard. We’ve seen how recent national mandates have negatively impacted the country, but Democrats are eager to use any excuse to increase government control.
“The Majority also missed the mark with H.R. 8450. This rushed reauthorization of our child nutrition programs is being used by the Left to supersize welfare for all. It widely expands access to free meals, even for wealthy families. Instead of working across the aisle to advance legislation that will help schools deal with Biden’s inflation and supply chain crises, H.R. 8450 pushes progressive ideology and more government red tape. So much for feeding kids.
“The fact is these bills do more harm than good.”
H.R. 2193, the Asuncion Valdivia Heat Illness and Fatality Prevention Act:
- Imposes onerous burdens on job creators.
- Imposes a Washington-knows-best national standard.
- Bullies OSHA into rushing its rulemaking process.
- Reduces judicial oversight by limiting legal challenges to one circuit which is favored by the Left.
- Spends billions of taxpayer dollars.
- Makes already difficult to run meal programs even more complicated for schools.
- Expands free meals to the wealthy.
- Hijacks school meal program to push leftist agenda.
- Bows to Big Labor by encouraging food purchases from unionized farms.
- Fails to address the infant formula shortage.
