The Bureau of Reclamation will begin reducing flows from Prineville Reservoir during November to meet winter operation releases and prepare the reservoir for flood control operations. The reservoir, impounded by Arthur R. Bowman Dam, is located on the Crooked River about 20 miles south of Prineville, Oregon.
Current releases from the reservoir are about 90 cubic feet per second. Winter operations call for the continued drawdown of the reservoir until mid-November when flows will be about 75 cfs. Flows may change depending on winter precipitation trends.
As the reservoir level is reduced, Reclamation will be conducting routine inspections of Arthur R. Bowman Dam. The inspections are designed to examine the dams structural integrity to ensure proper maintenance by Reclamation and its contractors.
These inspections are required to ensure the structure is properly maintained and to secure public safety," said Ron Eggers, Lower Columbia Area Manager.
Eggers also said those fishing in the Crooked River below the dam should use caution and avoid wading in the river during the fluctuations, which will occur during the day starting November 2.
