Nelson Dikes Dam Safety Modifications Contractor to Mobilize

The following news_release was published by the Bureau of Reclamation on May 28, 2016. It is reproduced in full below.

BILLINGS, Mont. -- The contractor selected to complete the Nelson Dikes Dam Safety Modifications, Johnson-Wilson Constructors, Inc., began mobilization to the site on May 26, 2016. Initial activities are anticipated to be limited to mobilization of equipment and materials, installation of dewatering wells downstream of the dikes, and site preparatory work. Normal reservoir operations are anticipated to continue through approximately July 1, after which the reservoir will be drawn down about 16.6 feet to elevation 2205 by Aug. 25, 2016 to facilitate safe excavation of the downstream slopes. Depending on the available water supply the reservoir may be back to normal operating levels in the spring of 2017.

Temporary road closures and/or detours around the dikes are not to be expected at this time. The boat ramp located near Dike DA is expected to remain open until early August.

An Environmental Assessment (EA) for the modification has been finalized and a Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) has been signed. The public can access the final EA and FONSI on Reclamation's website at www.usbr.gov/gp/mtao/nelson/.
