FALLON, Nev. - The Bureau of Reclamation and the Truckee-Carson Irrigation District will enter into contract negotiations October 2 for the transfer of operation, maintenance and replacement activities in the Newlands Project, located in western Nevada.
The project provides irrigation water for about 57,000 acres of cropland in the Lahontan Valley near Fallon and bench lands near Fernley in western Nevada.
“These negotiations help ensure that our infrastructure of canals and dams remains a reliable system for delivering water for drinking, irrigation, wildlife habitat and power production," said Terri Edwards, area manager, Lahontan Basin Area Office.
The Newlands Project has major water delivery features in both the Carson River and Truckee River basins, such as Derby Diversion Dam, Truckee Canal, Lahontan Dam, Carson River Diversion Dam, Lahontan Power Plant, and hundreds of miles of delivery and drainage canals.
The district has been the operations and maintenance contractor for the Newlands Project since 1926; its current contract expires Dec. 31, 2021. The first negotiation session for a new contract will be held Oct. 2, 2019, at 9 a.m. at the Fallon Convention Center in the Rawhide Wonder Room on 100 Campus Way, Fallon, NV 89406.
Reclamation will update the Lahontan Basin Area Office website with information for additional negotiation sessions when scheduled at https://www.usbr.gov/mp/lbao/programs/newlands-project.html.
