ALEXANDRIA, La. - Acting U.S. Attorney Alexander C. Van Hook announced today that a Pollock prisoner was sentenced to 77 months in prison for assaulting another inmate.
John Garza, 34, a prisoner at the U.S. Penitentiary in Pollock, La., who is from Gonzales, Texas, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Dee D. Drell on one count of assault resulting in serious bodily injury. He was also sentenced to three years of supervised release. According to the Jan. 11, 2017 guilty plea, Garza assaulted a fellow inmate on July 31, 2016 by stabbing him in the neck and back area. Video cameras showed Garza attacking a fellow inmate pushing him to the ground. He then stabbed and tramped on the inmate. The inmate was later brought to a local hospital where he was treated for severe injuries.
The FBI and U.S. Bureau of Prisons investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Tennille M. Gilreath prosecuted the case.
