MADISON, WIS. -- Jeffrey M. Anderson, Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Carlos Pena-Prado, 32, currently an inmate at Federal Correctional Institution at Oxford, Wis., was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge William Conley to 30 months in prison for possessing a weapon in the prison. Pena-Prado pleaded guilty to this charge on Aug. 17, 2017.
On Jan. 17, 2017, FCI-Oxford officials observed a six-inch shank, or handmade weapon, fall out of Pena-Prado’s jacket pocket. During a subsequent interview with federal agents, Pena-Prado admitted that he had made the shank shortly after arriving at FCI-Oxford.
Pena-Prado is currently serving a 36-month sentence at FCI-Oxford for a federal felony conviction in Arizona for illegal entry into the United States. The 30-month sentence imposed by Judge Conley will run consecutive to the prison sentence Pena-Prado is currently serving.
The charge against Pena-Prado was a result of an investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Prisons and Federal Bureau of Investigation. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Aaron Wegner.
