How politicians on Energy and Commerce Committee dealt with bills on Aug. 23

The Energy and Commerce Committee handled H.R.8738, H.R.8739 bills on Aug. 23, according to the US Congress.

Bill H.R.8738 titled “To require Transmission Organizations allow bids from aggregators of certain retail customers, and for other purposes” was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce by the House of Representatives. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Sean Casten with Suzanne Bonamici, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Mike Levin, Darren Soto, Paul Tonko as cosponsors.

Bill H.R.8739 titled “To direct the Secretary of Commerce to submit to Congress a report on the protection of consumer information in the possession of United States companies operating in Hong Kong and requests issued by the Government of Hong Kong to such companies for consumer information, content takedowns, or law enforcement assistance” was referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce and in addition to the Committee on Foreign Affairs for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned by the House of Representatives. The bill is sponsored by Rep. John Curtis with Scott Peters as cosponsor.

The Energy and Commerce Committee moves forward in some way on two bills per day, taking one action on average per day.

Most bills have a hearing where those involved explain why they are for or against the bill. Roughly 8,000 bills are addressed by committees each year but only about 800 make it to the floor of Congress, according to ushistory.org.

A 2019 report from the Brookings Institute argued committees aren’t capable of delving fully into the issues they address and are forced to rely on lobbyists.
