Department of Labor: Grants will help 'low-income and unemployed Native American adults and youth'

The U.S. Department of Labor awarded $70.8 million in grant funding to 166 Native American entities to provide training services and employment to low-income and unemployed adults and youth.

The grant funding is intended to create pathways to middle-class careers for American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian adults and youth in the program, according to an Aug. 23 Department of Labor news release.

“The U.S. Department of Labor today announced the award of $70.8 million in grant funding to 166 Indian and Native American entities to help provide employment and training services to low-income and unemployed Native American adults and youth – including American Indian, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiian adults and youth – and create pathways to middle-class careers,” the Department of Labor reported in the release.

The grants are intended to fund the “delivery of services” to Native American communities. These include academics, occupational skills and literacy skills development, which the Department of Labor said will “equip them to compete in today's workforce,” according to the release.

According to the release, the Department of Labor said $56,351,790 of the funds will serve low-income and unemployed American Indians, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians. The remaining $13,932,627 will be allocated to serve low-income American Indian, Alaska Native or Native Hawaiian youth – specifically ages 14-24 – living on or near reservations, including Hawaii.

A full list of the entities that are receiving funding, as well as the specific amounts they will be receiving can be found on the release.
