Armed Services Committee and the bills it addressed on Sept. 9

The Armed Services Committee handled H.R.8783, H.R.8792 bills on Sept. 9, according to the US Congress.

Bill H.R.8783 titled “To provide for emergency acquisition authority in the event of armed attack against a United States ally or partner by a foreign adversary of the United States” was referred to the House Committee on Armed Services by the House of Representatives. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Ronny Jackson with Jake Ellzey, C. Franklin, Seth Moulton, Stephanie Murphy, Elise Stefanik, Van Taylor, Randy Weber, Robert Wittman as cosponsors.

Bill H.R.8792 titled “To prohibit group health plans, health insurance issuers offering group or individual health insurance coverage, State plans under title XIX of the Social Security Act, State child health plans under title XXI of such Act, and the TRICARE program from applying a deductible to outpatient pediatric services” was referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce and in addition to the Committees on Education and Labor Ways and Means and Armed Services for a period to be subsequently determined by the Speaker in each case for consideration of such provisions as fall within the jurisdiction of the committee concerned by the House of Representatives. The bill is sponsored by Rep. Kim Schrier with Lauren Underwood as cosponsor.

Most bills have a hearing where those involved explain why they are for or against the bill. Roughly 8,000 bills are addressed by committees each year but only about 800 make it to the floor of Congress, according to ushistory.org.

A 2019 report from the Brookings Institute argued committees aren’t capable of delving fully into the issues they address and are forced to rely on lobbyists.
