GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Conditions for a prescribed burn scheduled for Thursday in Plateau Valley were not met so fire managers from the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit canceled a scheduled burn on Nick Mountain-Bald Mountain units.
“Every prescribed burn is closely coordinated with weather forecast," said Lathan Johnson, fire management specialist with the Bureau of Land Management. “We consider many factors in our prescription for a burn and as forecasts change, we must adjust our plans." According to Johnson, wind conditions were outside prescribed requirements for a safe burn and the burn was canceled.
Each prescribed burn conducted by the Upper Colorado River Interagency Fire Management Unit has a detailed fire plan developed well in advance that includes environmental analysis. A burn plan specifies conditions and criteria that must be met prior to initiating the burn. Safety is the primary focus when considering a prescribed burn and conditions Thursday no longer could support the planned burn.
