GUNNISON, Colo. - The Bureau of Land Management’s Gunnison Field Office plans to prepare a Plan Amendment and associated Environmental Assessment to consider updates to the Hartman Rocks Recreation Area Management Plan (2006).
This action will determine the appropriate course of management for the area and may include an amendment to the Gunnison Resource Area Approved Resource Management Plan of February 1993.
The proposed action would designate 14,423 acres as a Special Recreation Management Area, close a 4,363-acre area to recreational target shooting and limit winter travel with tracked vehicles to designated groomed trails within Hartman Rocks Recreation Area.
While the Gunnison Field Office has worked closely with Hartman Rocks users and shooting enthusiasts for the past several years to outline and resolve the recreation issues in the area, this area continues to receive heavy visitation by a variety of recreationists including hikers, runners, mountain bikers, motorcycles, off-highway vehicles, dispersed target shooters, horseback riders, cross-country skiers, rock climbers, campers and many more. The proposed action is needed to protect public safety and prevent further resource damage and to enhance recreation outcomes.
