CANON CITY, Colo. - The lightning-caused Eightmile Fire has been declared 100 percent contained. The fire started on June 23, 2014 in the Phantom Canyon area, approximately six miles northeast of Cañon City.
The Rocky Mountain Incident Management Team B assumed command of the fire on June 28th and transferred command of the fire back to the local Bureau of Land Management office on July 3. The fire was not contained at that time due to the extremely rugged terrain and the high risk to firefighters.
“After receiving a significant rainfall, the fire endured a relatively long hot and dry spell and showed no signs of activity for the past two weeks," said Ty Webb, Fire Management Officer for the Royal Gorge Field Office. With the forecasted return of a very active monsoon, there is minimal risk of the fire flaring up again. “We will continue to check the fire until it is declared out," Webb added.
